Carrier Oils

Carrier Oils (also known as vegetable oils or base oils) are a generally oils derived from plants. These are used in Aromatherapy primarily to dilute the essential oil before application to the skin. (essential oils should never be applied directly to the skin as they can cause severe irritations or reactions). They are also used to prevent evaporation, and generally sustain the stability of the essential oil.

Whereas essential oils are derived from the bark, roots and other areas of the plant, carrier oils are primarily made from the fattier parts of the plant. Without carrier oils, the essential oil would break down and evaporate.

Carrier oils vary in type, fragrance, composition, and smell, and the use of each one can therefore alter the fragrance, colour, and properties of the essential oil it is being mixed with. Most carrier oils are well matched to their respective essential oils.
